                  Biography

Paul Stouthamer studied ‘cello in northern France as a teenager and passed his exams with high marks at the Conservatoire de Lille for each of four years. When his family moved to the United States, he studied at the University of Akron,Ohio, where he took classes from Robert Perry of the Cleveland Orchestra, Jay Humeston, Paul Biss and Josef Gingold. Later, he moved to Boston, where he studied composition, film music, arrangement and improvisation with Bruce Gertz, Rich Appelman, Bill Pierce, Jerry Bergonzi, John Laporta, Ken Pullig and Michael Gibbs at the Berklee College of Music. He received his diploma cum laude from the Berklee School of Music. While in Boston he played extensively in jazz venues with Harry Miller, Makoto Ozone, The Worlds Experience Orchestra under Jamil Jones, Gate 5, Terrence Butler and Albert Lamar.

He then moved back to Europe, where he settled in Barcelona and travelled throughout Europe, participating actively in the modern Dutch music scene. He performed and recorded with Frans Vermeersen, Michiel Braam, Johannes Ammon, Arendt Niks and wrote compositions that premiered in  Amersfoort, Rotterdam, the Concertgebouw of Amsterdam, and various venues in Germany . He was a composer for the Dutch theatre group, Griftheater, with Frits Vogels for 12 years; these compositions were highlighted in performances in Holland, Germany, Croatia, the Czech Republic, Philadelphia and France, at the Centre Pompidou in Paris. He was invited as a special guest for the TV program, “Reizeger in Muziek” of the Dutch VPRO. In addition, he composed for and played with the Ricciotti Ensemble, directed by Leonard van Goudoever, who performed in Amsterdam, Barcelona, and Gdansk, in the shipyards. In Lambach, Austria he has worked for the last 20 years as cello and jazz tutor for the European Jazz and Pop Orchestra who also performed compositions and arrangements of his.

In Barcelona he has performed with Mauricio and Liba Villavecchia, Perico Sambaet, Jo Krause, Ginessa Ortega, Tanya Tagaq, Chicuelo, Ramón Muntaner, Jordi Sabatés, Theo Lovendie, Albert Bover, Lola Stouthamer, Matthew Simon, Julian Vaughn, Paul Stocker and Horacio Fumero. Together with Geert Krosenbrink and Joaquin Pelaez they formed the successful classical music ensemble “Trio Amati”. He set up the Strings Imrov Association (SIA) with Jaime del Blanco and Joao da Silva: violins, Manel Ortega: contrabass and Daniel Levi: drums. And, reaching over to Eastern Europe he put the band Balkan Noise together with Aljosa Mutic´: tenor sax, Iván Dimitrov: gadulka and Jovan Horvat Grbic on percussion. He played a memorable concert with Hamid Khabazi on Tar. Settling into Catalan traditional folk music he performs with Francesc Marrimon on accordian and Eduard Casals on gralla. He wrote for and directed the Big Band de l’Associació de Escoles de Catalunya for its European tour. He teaches cello, ear training, jazz and improvisation at various schools, including the Taller de Musics ESEM  conservatory.

Recently he has travelled to Stockholm, Sweden where he has performed with Jess Gertztenkorn and Leo Lindberg at the Kummelnäs Konstsalon and with Stian Grimstad at the Torsten Renqvist Foundation. His composition “Four Studies for soprano or alto saxophone” was recorded by Anders Paulsson. He is invited on a regular basis as a guest at the internet program “Larry’s Corner”.

His most recent production has been the opera, “Lavandería (Wash House)”, which he produced, composed, wrote the libreto for, and directed. It is a  bilingual production for mixed ensemble and with mezzo-soprano: Luz Bermejo, actor: Bea Insa, mime/movement: Pepijn Spoor and Ira Prica. This happened at the cultural center and adventure park “Anigami” in Roda de Ter, Catalunya. A documentary on the work was filmed by Ivan Babinchak.
